Come, Mommy

Irreverent TV Critic

Liam doesn't watch much TV, so it affects him more than most kids his age when he does see it. This morning Kieran, Liam, and I were all lying in bed when Liam spied our new TV remote and asked to play with it. I told him he could. He managed to turn on the TV, and then, by random accident, found a channel that was playing a Toddlerstock Wiggles video. He stared in horror at the screen for a couple of minutes.

Liam: "Mommy? Those guys?"

Me: "They're called The Wiggles."

Liam: "Um? Those Wiggle Guys? Why are they so scary?"

Liam pauses in thought...

"Mommy? I think we should turn off the TV. Kieran's scared, too."

More thought...

"I guess The Wiggles generally aren't good for little kids to watch."

Somehow I don't think this is quite the reaction the Disney folks were going for with their morning line-up.

  • Good thing he wasn't at the beach with us last summer. We went with a bunch of other families and all shared a big house. One family, whose daughter is the same age as my son (they were turning two at the time), brought her Wiggles DVD. They played it in the morning, they played it at lunch, they played it after the beach and while getting ready for dinner. They played it if she bit her tongue or if she wouldn't take a nap. You get the idea. The other 12 people in the house that week were either screaming in agony or singing "Big Red Car" helplessly, all other thoughts driven from their heads. It was terrible.

  • LOL - i guess that means you don't have to worry about him watching too much tv, at least not the wiggles. ava has never seen the wiggles (though she's seen more than her fair share of other programs) - wonder how she'd react.

  • That's great. And, yeah, totally not what the Disney folks were after. I wish my girls felt that way about The Wiggles!

  • Carter would tell him it's really the newer wiggles shows that are scary- the older ones (he monitors the TIVO for 2002 or earlier) are just fine indeed ; )
